In 1996, Scenic Hudson, a regional nonprofit environmental and open space protection organization, acquired the property to protect its historic and natural resources and to create a sustainable heritage preserve. They removed accumulated garbage, partnered with Michigan Technical University's Industrial Archaeology program and embarked on ten years of archaeological research and field work.
